Gretchen Ann Johnson

Gretchen Johnson, beloved mother, and grandmother, passed away on December 16, 2023. She was born on June 14, 1951, in Alton, Illinois, to Edward and Dorothy (Ash) Plumpe. Throughout her life, she exuded a vibrant spirit that touched the lives of those around her. Gretchen's legacy will forever be cherished, as she leaves behind daughters: Carrie (Curt) Sullivan of Wildwood, Missouri, Samantha (Chris Douglas) Johnson of Wentzville, Missouri, and Jill Johnson of St. Louis, Missouri; brother Guy (Darlene) Plumpe of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren: Allyson, Loren, Clover, Jacob, Jared, Jasper, Jayce, Jayden, Taylan, Devinn and Royal; and her loving companion, Jim Marshall of St. Louis, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Skip" Johnson Jr. and grandson, Alonzo. Gretchen lived life to the fullest, and a significant part of her heart belonged to her beloved St. Louis Cardinals. A devoted fan, she never missed a game. When Gretchen wasn't passionately cheering for her Cardinals, she found joy in other activities that brought her closer to her loved ones. She loved spending time by her pool, swimming with her grandchildren, and hosting lively BBQs where laughter and delicious food filled the air. Gretchen's competitive nature shone through in her beloved croquet games, where she exhibited both skill and determination. Her zest for friendly competition was contagious, and her victory screams will forever echo in the cherished memories of those who played alongside her. In honoring Gretchen's wishes, cremation has taken place, and her remains will be laid to rest at Valhalla Funeral Chapel, Crematory and Cemetery, located at 7600 St. Charles Rock Road, St. Louis, MO 63133. A private graveside service will be held with her family. While we mourn the loss of Gretchen, let us celebrate her vibrant spirit and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind. Her love, laughter, and competitive nature will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of Gretchen's life will take place on January, 7, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Mattingly's, 8108 N. Lindbergh, Florissant, Missouri. Family and friends are invited to come together to share cherished memories, honor her remarkable journey, and find solace in one another's presence. Let us remember Gretchen for the joy she brought to our lives, and may her spirit guide us towards embracing life and celebrating each precious moment.
